Dental Fillings and Crowns at Rockford Pediatric Dentistry

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children first visit the dentist by 12 months of age, or even as early as the eruption of their first tooth. Early visits to the pediatric dentist help children become acclimated to and less nervous in the dental environment. Regular checkups every six months allow us to diagnose and treat decay while it is small, however our greatest goal is to prevent decay altogether.

Dental Restorations for Children

Despite our best efforts, dental cavities remain the most common chronic childhood illness. If left untreated, cavities can cause discomfort, difficulty eating, pain, and infection. In order to avoid this, we recommend removing cavities and restoring teeth with fillings and crowns whenever possible.

A dental filling is made of a white composite resin that matches the color of your child’s tooth. This is appropriate for smaller cavities, or for restoring cavities on the front teeth of a child’s smile. Crowns, on the other hand, cover the entire surface of a tooth, and are a more durable option for fixing cavities that are large and span multiple surfaces of a tooth. Choosing between a dental filling or a crown is a decision that the pediatric dentist makes based off of the size, shape, and depth of a cavity. Both options can help restore a tooth to its original function, so your child can eat, drink, and speak without discomfort.
